Things to do
You’re utterly spoiled for choice when looking for things to do during your stay at Rivendell cottage. The area is bursting with walks and activities for all ages and interests. We’re going to share a few of our favourites with you.
Walking
There are so many walking routes that you can enjoy during your stay. You can enjoy a short stroll around the village, a sheltered amble through woodland, or really challenge yourself to a hike through the fells.
Some of our favourite places to walk include:
- Dodd Wood (short and challenging routes available)
- Spout Force and Darling How Plantation
- Bassenthwaite Lake
- Cockup Circular Walk
- Walla Crag
- Skiddaw via Longside Edge and Ullock Pike from Bassenthwaite
- Skiddaw via Birkett Edge and Bakestall
Cycling Routes
The Lake District offers incredible cycling routes. Keen cyclists visit us from around to world to test their skill on both our mountain and road routes. Whether you’re looking for an easy loop to ride and enjoy the scenery or an off-road challenge you’ve never experienced before, we have it all!
Routes to look out for are:
- Skidda Loop (15 miles with optional extras)
- Whinlatter Forest (the MUST for mountain bikers)
- Keswick Dismantled Railway (great for families)
For the Adventurous
There are lots of activities waiting for thrill seekers in our not-so-sleepy part of the world. Try your hand at water sports on our lakes, soar through the air on ziplines, and hit the trails on your mountain bike.
- Go Ape at Whinlatter
- Wild swimming in Bassenthwaite Lake
- Fell climbing – there are lots to choose from!
For the Nature Lovers
The Lakes boast impressive wildlife and unspoiled natural environments. You can wander in the wilderness or visit some of our nature reserves and zoos to see nature up close.
Some of the best places in the are to see wildlife are:
- The Lake District Wildlife Park
- Dodd’s Wood Ospreywatch
- Deer Park at Armathwaite Hall
Food and drink
There are lots of fantastic places to eat and drink in Cumbria. Bassenthwaite village has its own pub you can enjoy and we’re very lucky to have The Lakes Distillery close by.
